When a little person looks at the stage in a concert hall, it might seem at first glance that the orchestra is just one big group of people all randomly dragging bows, hitting things, blowing into stuff, or plucking strings—basically doing something you can’t really see from a distance anyway. But that’s a mistake.

Every member of the orchestra is, in their field, a bit of a superhero. Every musician, every note, every sound—literally every movement—has its exact place and timing. There’s a detailed guide for everything, and it’s called the score. It’s basically like a chemical formula or, if you prefer, a recipe for how to mix it all just right so that what comes from the stage isn’t an explosion, but breathtaking music. This chemistry is going to be fun!
